Wednesday 24th April
Dear Parents,
We have a number of exciting event and activities happening between now and mid-term so I thought it appropriate to outline the main details.
Thursday April 25th
Family Fashion Show
As you know by now Shanbally NS Parents Association is holding a Family Fashion Show on Thursday April 25th at 7.30pm in Carrigaline Court Hotel. As outlined there will be entertainment by magician, Gerard Kearney, as well as spot prizes and catwalk appearances from Cork City players and more importantly again, children, parents and staff of our school. By now, preparations are almost complete- I’m glad to report that Mr. Clifford and I are waxed, tanned and toned so watch out David Beckham.
By now all models should have received a note from the Parents Association outlining instructions and details of the night. As per our usual protocol mobile phones or other recording devices are not allowed “backstage” or near the changing areas. If you need any more information, please contact a member of our P.A. One could not imagine the amount of effort that has gone into this new and exciting venture. I urge you all to come out and support what should be a fantastic & memorable occasion. All proceeds go directly towards our pupil’s education (Book Rental Scheme and IT Development) and our wonderful PA richly deserves a great turnout.
Third Class Workshop
Claran Consulting is a specialist IT, life sciences and engineering recruitment agency who are sponsoring a series of events in Cork on April 25th to promote international “Girls in ICT Day” and Silicon Republic’s campaign, Women Invent Tomorrow, encouraging young girls and boys to consider careers in the area of information and communication technologies. Shanbally NS is one of two primary schools in Cork selected for this event. Tomorrow, our 3rd class will complete a workshop in school on the theme – “Use your imagination to create a short animated story by modelling play-doh”.
The presenter Cristina Luminea is CEO of ThoughtBox, an award winning start-up and education software provider based on “gameful learning”. Cristina has two Honours Degrees in Software Development a, a Bachelor Degree in International Marketing and a research Master Degree in Engineering, Her presence tomorrow will hopefully inspire our young students to pursue in technology.
Friday April 26th
UCC Visit
Following their recent visit to CIT, our 5th and 6th classes will visit UCC this Friday. This visit is an initiative of UCC Visitors Centre to get younger people to interact with University in a fun and educational manner, and to inspire our young pupils to explore the notion of third level education. A tour consists of a visit to the Aula Maxima, the Stone Corridor and a visit to the Crawford Observatory. The children are dressed in junior conferring robes and each tour concludes with a junior conferring ceremony where each child is awarded a graduation scroll as a memento of their visit. This should be an enjoyable and enriching experience for all.
Tree Planting
Our 4th c lass pupils will leave school by bus at 9.45 am this Friday to join with some pupils of Ringaskiddy NS to take part in a tree planting ceremony in GlaxoSmithKline. This is part of the Ireland /Northern Ireland “One Million Trees on One Day” initiative. We are always encouraging our pupils to think “Green” so this should be a rewarding hands-on experience.
GAA Training
Third class has hurling training at 11.15 am with former principal, Mr. Liam Shanahan (weather permitting). On return to the school, 4th class will have a similar session at 12 noon.
Teaching Practice
I’d like Junior Infant parents to welcome Miss Christine Turner. Christine, a Primary Teacher Training student, is commencing a 4-week Teaching Practice in the class. She will teach the children during the school day and will be undergoing Inspection by the Training College. Ms. Ni Loingsigh continues to supervise and help in the planning for the class work. We support Christine as she takes these final steps to becoming a fully qualified Primary Teacher. I’m sure the children will benefit from her efforts.
Thank you,
David Nolan
